I am convinced that the best apples for pies are not found at the grocery store but are the old heirloom varieties that have been around for years but can only be found at apple orchards and farmer’s market. That is the case with the Northern Spy apple (except the one time I did them in one grocery store!). This podcast episode I will talk about why the phrase “spies for pies” came into being and also why we do not see this apple in every grocery store if it’s such a great pie apple.
Last week, I did an episode on the Rise and Fall of the Red Delicious apple. I asked people what they thought of Red Delicious and the majority of people don’t like them with some people saying they were ok, but no one saying they thought they are a good apple.
In the episode I talked about how that some orchards are pulling their Red Delicious apples out to replace with other varieties. Here is a video from Instagram of an orchard doing just that with their Red Delicious. They are replacing that block of trees with Sugar Bee apples.
