Episode 39 - What is a Elstar Apple?

In today's episode you are going to learn all about the Elstar apple as well as why sometimes apples need to sit for a while to develop full flavor.

The Elstar apple originated in the Netherlands and is the topic of today’s Memorial Day podcast episode! I hear this apple is best when stored for a bit, for peak flavor. I have had them several times before but the name has been different. When I was in Utah, the apple was refereed to as Valstar. I looked it up and sure enough it’s another name for Elstar.

The apples in bags in the bags above were labelled Valstar when I purchased them in Utah in 2023. These ones didn’t look as red as the Elstar apple I got in 2020 seen in the first picture. Those I got in Wisconsin. There is a strain of Elstar called Red Elstar in which the apple is mostly red. It’s possible that the one I got in Wisconsin was in fact the Red Elstar strain because it’s pretty much all red, except around the stem.

My podcast has now surpassed 2,000 downloads!!!! Thanks everyone who listened to all, some, or any of the episodes. I appreciate the support. Here are the top 3 most listened to episodes so far:
