The Elstar apple originated in the Netherlands and is the topic of today’s Memorial Day podcast episode! I hear this apple is best when stored for a bit, for peak flavor. I have had them several times before but the name has been different. When I was in Utah, the apple was refereed to as Valstar. I looked it up and sure enough it’s another name for Elstar.
The apples in bags in the bags above were labelled Valstar when I purchased them in Utah in 2023. These ones didn’t look as red as the Elstar apple I got in 2020 seen in the first picture. Those I got in Wisconsin. There is a strain of Elstar called Red Elstar in which the apple is mostly red. It’s possible that the one I got in Wisconsin was in fact the Red Elstar strain because it’s pretty much all red, except around the stem.
