Episode 22 - What's a Smokehouse Apple?

In today's episode I am sharing about the Smokehouse apple from Pennsylvania and talking about region specific apple varieties.

Smokehouse may sound like a strange name for an apple, but in the 1800s they had a different mindset of naming their apples that didn’t involve coming up with the best name for marketing like a Honeycrisp, Autumn Crisp or Cosmic Crisp (so many apples with crisp in them nowadays!) Listen to this episode to learn about this apple. I talk about regional specific apple varieties as well and why it’s fun as an an apple fan to travel to different parts of the country during apple season.

Last week, I shared the history of the Fuji apple. I put up a poll asking whether you like Evercrisp or Fuji apples better, if you had tried both of them. The survey said 71% of you preferred the Evercrisp apple over Fuji. I am with you on that one. I just saw Evercrisp on sale this past week at a Safeway store.
