Episode 7 - History of Thomas Jefferson's Favorite Apple

In today's episode, learn about the history of the apple that Thomas Jefferson loved the most - the Esopus Spitzenburg

This week, we are talking about an apple that was discovered in the 1700s!!! Listen to this episode above to learn about this variety and also check out the post on my blog to find out what orchards you can find Spitzenburg apples at.

Last week I asked if you still buy Golden Delicious apples and 59% of you said you don’t. One of my readers, Emily, pointed out that while Golden Delicious at the grocery store that have been sitting around for months aren’t any good, but getting them first right off the tree can be a good apple eating experience. And I agree. Next time you are at an apple orchard especially if you are picking your own give Golden Delicious a try. Some apples are just best enjoyed right off the tree. And some apples like the Spitzenburg are actually better when they have been stored for it. That is why it’s so important to know your apple varieties well.
