Opal Apples in Stores Now
In this newsletter, I am going to be talking about the yellow Opal apple as well as two other yellow apples to look for in your grocery store.
You may or may not have heard yet, but I have a fondness for yellow skinned apples. I have tried 24 different types of yellow apples. One of my favorite is the the Opal Apple! I like for it’s crisp flavor that is sweet but not overly so with enough tartness to give it a more well rounded experience.
They are in season right now. I found bags of them at a Safeway store on sale in this last week. The season for them goes into the winter months but I think they are at their best as soon as you can get them. I find to have more issues with them being softer in the winter.
There are two other yellow apples that you should be on the lookout for and both of them are newer varieties that were created by crossing an apple with a Honeycrisp.
Lucy Glo is a yellow skinned apple with a pink flesh and one I highly recommend if you like an apple more on the tart side or looking for something to bake with for the upcoming holidays. They do tend to run on the more expensive side. I saw then going for $3.99 a pound at Safeway. You may be able to find a better deal at Trader Joe’s or I have seen them on sale at Sprouts in the past. They are truly an unique apple that I think are worth getting a taste of.
Aura is a brand new variety that is grown by Stemilt. As of this writing, I have not have them myself yet. They are very limited and hard to find right now. If you are lucky enough to spot them doesn’t hesitate to be among the first to give them a try.
I am working on a guide to tart apples for my paid subscribers, free subscribers will get a preview when it’s done. I want to know what tart apples are you buying? Help me track your answers by submitting your favorite tart apples here.
