What States Have An Official State Apple?
In this newsletter, Iearn about what states have an official state apple.
Did you know that same states actually have a state apple?
Here is a list of states and what apple is their state apple:
Ohio - Melrose
West Virginia - Golden Delicious
Rhode Island - Rhode Island Greening
Illinois - Gold Rush
Minnesota - Honeycrisp
The Arkansas Black apple is named after the name of Arkansas but I didn’t see anywhere that it was an official state apple. The apple is the start fruit of New York, Vermont, and Washington but there isn’t a specific variety that is named as the state apple. The Empire sounds like it could be the state of the apple of New York but it’s not.
I was surprised to hear that Gold Rush was the state apple of Illinois. An elementary school class had pushed the government to declare it the state fruit after not having an official state fruit in 2008.
Honeycrisp was developed at the University of Minnesota so not surprising it became the state apple!
Rhode Island Greening are an old heirloom variety that are one of my favorite apples for baking.
Melrose is a great apple that I have picked at an apple orchard in Ohio when it was at it’s peak and man was it good!
