Have You Heard of Sunrise Magic?
In this newsletter, I am talking about the Sunrise Magic apple from Washington. I will describe two very different experiences I have had with this apple variety.
Do you give apples a 2nd chance? This is something I want to scream to the high heavens about. Just because you didn’t like an apple the first time, doesn’t necessarily mean you aren’t going to like it a 2nd time. Sometimes it can come down to timing or how long an apple has been sitting around the grocery store.
This is my story with the Sunrise Magic apple out of Washington. This is a variety that was created at Washington State University just like the Cosmic Crisp apple. It’s a cross between a Splendor apple (which I had for the first time this fall) and the ever popular Gala apple.
The first time I had them was from a Trader Joe’s store in the spring time one year. The texture was NOT good. They were soft and not the least bit crispy. The flavor wasn’t remarkable either.
But I wasn’t ready to completely right off the apple. What if I had them closer to when they were harvested. Would they be any better? A couple weeks ago I finally answered that question. I found some bags of them at a Grocery Outlet store in Oregon.
This time around, I expected the apple to be more crispy than it was when I had them during a different time of the year. And that is exactly what I found to be the case. They were a crisp apple.
What about the flavor? This is a sweet apple with not a ton of acid to it. If you like a Gala you might like Sunrise Magic. But if you find yourself reaching for Granny Smith and other tart apples at the store, I would avoid this one.
My thoughts now are this apple is fine, not bad like from my first impression. It’s nothing to write home about in terms of flavor. Nothing that I already haven’t tested. I did feel that I could have made a worst choice at the story for sure and two of my kids liked them. I wonder how much longevity this variety is going to have when there are other new varieties out there that either stay crisp longer or have better flavor.
