Have You Had a Kanzi Apple Lately?
Today I am talking about my recent experience with some Kanzi apples I picked up at two different grocery stores.
This last week, I was up in the Portland area, and got close enough to a Trader Joe’s, so I made sure to take some time to stop in. I was hoping to find my beloved Ojai Pixie Tangerines (read my post on my blog about them) because I heard they had them but I came up empty.
Instead, I decided to buy a bag of Kanzi apples, as it had been a while since I’d had them. They are a tart-sweet apple, leaning more on the tart side—perfect for my oldest daughter. I thought it would be a welcome change from the Pink Lady and Granny Smith apples she’s been eating lately.
The very next day, I was at Grocery Outlet, and they had Kanzi apples for $1.99 for a 2-pound bag, so I ended up buying more at a cheaper price.
The first apple I had from the bag led me to regret my financial commitment. It was on the soft side—not really enjoyable for out-of-hand eating. But since then, I’ve eaten more of the Kanzi apples I bought, and they’ve all been fine: firm, crisp, and tart, but not too tart. If I had continued to find them too soft, I would have just used them for cooking or baking.
It just goes to show that not every apple in the bag is the same. It’s like when I had Wild Twist apples last week—some were excellent, and some were just okay. That’s one of the downsides of buying apples in bags: you don’t get to pick out individual ones.
Although, for me, there’s a benefit—bagged apples tend to be on the smaller side (except for the giant Cosmic Crisp apples my mother-in-law has been buying in bags. Those things could give someone a concussion if you got hit in the head with one!).

Last week, I asked if you had ever tried a Wild Twist apple. 80% of you answered “no.” I think that’s a shame—it’s a great eating apple for this time of year! I suggest looking for them at any Kroger-owned store. They carry them under their Private Selection brand in bags. I don’t recall seeing them sold loose by the pound there.
Sometimes Costco carries Wild Twist apples, but when I was regularly shopping there, I didn’t see them all the time.
If you want to try either Wild Twist or Kanzi, reply to this newsletter or leave a comment. Let me know where you’re located and which apple you’d like to try, and I’ll share any information I have about where you might be able to find them in your area.
