What Happened to the Braeburn Apple?
In this newsletter, I talk about the Braeburn apple which seems to have fallen out of favorite in grocery stores.
Have you had a Braeburn apple recently?
When I saw them in the store it got me thinking that you really don’t see them nearly as much as you use to.
Why might that be? Let me show you what happened when I bit into that apple.
Ugh!!! What happened? The apple was brown on the inside. It looked totally fine on the outside there was no indication that this was what was on the inside.
There is actually a term called “Braeburn Browning Disorder”. It tends to happen more when the apple is harvested late, which is one of the characters of the Braeburn. They ripen late. This browning develops in storage.
It didn’t actually affect the taste of the fruit but it’s really hard to continue to eat an apple that looks like that!
If grocery stores carry these and they end up with lot of this problem, consumers are going to get upset and stop buying them. So I think this leading to the apple being passed over for other favorites.
Besides the brown this apple was not crisp either!
New apples that have been replacing it that are Braeburn crosses include Envy and Jazz.
Honeycrisp has an issue as well. It gets spots like this in storage sometimes:
This is one reason why I think the Future of Honeycrisp is a murky one.
This week, I got some more Sugar Bee apples from Costco. I continue to see more searches now on my blog for the Wild Twist apple. Are you seeing it in stores?
