What are the Earliest Apple Varieties
In this newsletter, I am going to be talking about the earliest varieties that are being harvested right now.
You may not think of July as the beginning of the apple season but it actually is! There are two varieties that are super early. Starting with the Transparent apple.
These green apples are ripening up at orchards across the country. But you aren’t likely to see them in the store as they don’t last very well at all. They go badly quickly. They are best picked right off the tree and eaten. They are a super tart apple, you won’t find much sweetness in these.
What bother with them? The one reason for me is applesauce. They make fantastic applesauce. Because they got soft so quickly, then break down really well and produce an applesauce with a great texture. I have to add some sweetness to them or it’s just too tart for my family. I prefer to use honey.
The other apple is the very similar Lodi apple. It’s also tart but tends to last a little longer than a Transparent apple does. Some call it an improved Transparent but not everyone agrees on whether the flavor is an improvement. I would need to taste them side by side to make that judgment myself.
Make sure to check out my full write-ups on these two apples:
