The Unheralded Apples #5
This week I am adding another apple to our unheralded apple list. These are varieties you probably haven't heard of but should grab one if you see them.
This week we continue our Unheralded Apple series. I am coming to you on a different day this week as on Wednesday, we were visiting Craters of the Moon National Monument (I will show you a picture at the end).
So what apple is up next in our series. Well this one….
This is the Shamrock Apple. It’s a green skinned apple with a sweet flavor. I know we have been conditioned to think green apples are super tart because of Granny Smith but there are plenty of them that actually have a sweetness to them.
I first encountered this apple at Whole Foods Market one fall from a local orchard. It took several years for me to find it again, but I did at the farmers market in Toledo, Ohio.
The apples at the Toledo Farmers Market were grown by Witt Orchards. What I love about them is that they sell you whatever size bag you want and then you fill it with apples. I always pick out many different varieties, taking photos of each in the crates so I can easily identify later on. I wish more orchards did it this way as I don’t always want to buy a whole bag of a certain apple, especially if I had not had it before.
The Shamrock apple is a cross between McIntosh and Golden Delicious. It’s sweeter than a McIntosh and more tart than a Golden Delicious.
Check out my full review of the Shamrock Apple.
Reminder - If you love what you are seeing in this email, make sure you hit the LIKE (heart) button. Thank you for everyone that did last week, I would LOVE to see even more LIKES this week.
As I promised here is a picture from Craters of the Moon. It was such an unique landscape with so much black rocks. We got to walk through some lava tubes.
What is your favorite national park site to visit?
Do you live in Oregon or Washington? If you do I want to hear from you. Leave a comment and share with me your favorite apple orchards. I am going to be in those states all of apple season, so I am looking to check out as many orchards as I can.
Thanks everyone for continuing to request new stores be added to my apple store guides. New stores to be added eventually include: Giant, Safeway, Nob Hill, Hannaford (I miss Maine!), and Whole Foods
What grocery store would you like me to do next? Put your request in here.
