The Unheralded Apples #4
In this newsletter, I am bringing you the next part in a series on apples that you may not have heard of yet, but deserve some love!
This week we continue our Unheralded Apple series. This is an apple variety that I found very early on in our RV travels. I was at the largest farmer’s market in the country, the Dane County Farmer’s Market in Madison, WI. It surrounds the entire capital building in Madison but in 2020 it was moved because of the pandemic.
I was looking for one specific vendor, Weston’s Antique Apples. They grow over 120 different varieties, specializing in the old types. They separate their apples by sweet and tart at the market making it easy to find what you are looking for with names you probably aren’t.
I had my first Smokehouse apples from them in 2020. The apple originated in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1830! So when I was in Lancaster County the next season, I found them in several places including a small Amish market.
Look at that price, 69 cents a pound. You better believe I stocked up.
2021 was the best apple season of my life. I should do a write-up about it sometime.
So what’s the Smokehouse apple like? You may see that green color and start thinking tart, but it’s more of a sweet-tart apple, not a super tart one like Granny Smith.
Check out my full review of the Smokehouse apple.
