The Unheralded Apples #2
In this newsletter, I am bringing you the new part in a series on apples that you may not have heard of yet, but deserve some love!
Many years back a produce company that is centered in California send me several different boxes of fruit. It was so fun. A couple of those shipments contained some heirloom apples, including the King David Apple.
It looks like this.
It’s a pretty red apple, isn’t it.
This variety goes all the way back to the 1830s. It’s believed to have been created by crossing a Jonathan and a Arkansas Black apple.
After the first time I had this apple it was many years before I got try it again. But I was lucky enough to spot one at a Central Market store in Fort Worth, Texas one fall day. This store is my favorite grocery store for apples, they have such a big selection. If you are lucky enough to be near one, make sure you stop in, especially during the fall. Central Market is like an up-scale HEB (who owns them).
To learn all about this apple and what it tastes like (it didn’t taste like what I expected with it’s parents), get the complete lowdown on this apple by reading my full write-up on the blog.
Reminder - If you love what you are seeing in this email, make sure you hit the LIKE (heart) button. Thank you for everyone that did last week, I would LOVE to see even more LIKES this week!!!
What type of apple would you like to see me talk about next in this series? A sweet or tart apple? Hit the Comment button on this email and use either the word “SWEET” or “TART”. Thanks!
For the first time, I spotted EverCrisp apples at Trader Joe's. They were being sold in bags. I will have to update my Trader Joe’s apple guide to include them now. These were grown in Washington and they are good choice for someone that likes Fuji apples and a sweet, crisp apple. I think they have more flavor than Fuji does.
I am also now looking for Lemonade apple from New Zealand in stores. If you are interested in learning about all different fruits to buy in stores this month, check out the May 2024 Fruit Picks episode on my podcast, Eat Shop Waste Not.
Thanks everyone for continuing to request new stores be added to my apple store guides. No new guides this week but more will be arriving soon. Keep the requests coming!!!!
