The Unheralded Apples #1
In this newsletter, I am beginning a series on apples that you may not have heard of yet, but deserve some love!
Today I am beginning a series on different varieties of apples that you may not have heard of it but are flavorful ones to seek out. These are the kinds of apples you won’t find in major grocery stores. They are the ones you have to buy a farmer’s market or directly from an orchard.
My family and I have been traveling the country in our camper since 2020, so I have been all over the place looking for any apple variety I can find to try.
Today we are going to start with the Roxbury Russet. Look how pretty this is:
I always appreciate these kinds of apples that don’t have just a pretty, perfectly looking red skin. I love seeing all the different colors in the skin, the reds, the oranges, the greens, the browns.
This particular one you are looking at here, I picked up at farmer’s market in Asheville, North Carolina one fall. It was a great market and there was an apple vendor there selling all sorts of unique varieties.
The name "Roxbury" comes from the town of Roxbury in the Massachusetts Bay Colony where it was grown even before our independence in the early 17th century.

I had my first Cosmic Crisp apple that wasn’t perfectly crisp. The strange thing was the darker part of the apple was not as crisp as I wanted but the rest of it was.
Wild Twist remains the most searched for apple on my blog this last week. Wild Twist is on my list in my episode of my podcast - The Children of Honeycrisp
