Riding the Rails and Eating Apples
In this newsletter I am sharing about my cross country train trip this week and how I packed some apples to take with me.
This week, I’ve been riding the rails with my son across this beautiful country of ours, from Portland, Oregon, all the way to Chicago, Illinois, and then on to Ann Arbor, Michigan. The first train ride was 46 hours long, followed by an overnight stay in Chicago due to bad weather, and then it was on to Michigan.
Here are a couple of my favorite pictures from the trip, taken as we passed through Montana near Glacier National Park.
I love this slower form of travel because it forces me to slow down and relax. I get to see amazing parts of the country that you can’t experience any other way. If you have any questions about taking a long-distance train, feel free to leave a comment.
Naturally, I had to bring some apples with me. To pack as many as I could, I picked out some smaller apples, mostly Pink Lady, which I got at the store before I left. I placed them in a white container with a lid to keep them from getting bruised. The key is to pack them in tightly, without a lot of empty space, which is why the smaller apples are important. I also added some mandarins.
I also brought with me a brand new apple that I just tried for the first time last week—Kissabel Rouge. I’ll share more about it next week.
