My Top 5 Apples Moments of 2024
In this newsletter, I will be sharing my personal top 5 apple moments in 2024.
Happy New Year everyone!!!! I will be back tomorrow with the newest episode of my podcast.
For today I wanted to share with you my own personal top 5 apple moments from 2024. These are listed in no particular order.
Finding KinderKrisp at the Portland Farmer’s Market
KinderKrisp is an apple variety that I have heard about before and was on my list to try. One of my favorite things is when those unexpected finds of my list happen. I wasn’t going to the Portland Farmer’s Market thinking I was going to find this apple but was thrilled when I caught the sign for them at a table.
The apple is a small sized apple. One of it’s parents is the Honeycrisp. It’s crisp and has a great sweet-tart flavor. I mentioned during my last podcast episode. Take a listen if you haven’t yet by using the link below.
97 Cents a Pound Cosmic Crisp
I always love a good bargain especially on apples, so when I saw this sale at a Smith’s store in Utah last winter, I was excited to take full advantage of it and stock up on apples. Cosmic Crisp store really well, so I have no issues with buying a lot at once.
But I wanted to take this opportunity to share the downside of this. If the apples are this cheap, it’s likely the farmer that grew them aren’t getting paid very much. I remember the first time I saw a Cosmic Crisp I paid $4.99 a pound for the apple just so I could try it (I only bought like 2). Now there are tons of Cosmic Crisp apples on the market. The supply has gone up faster than the demand for the apple. It’s a challenge for those growing apples for sure.
Check out this article that talks about the supply and demand issues with Cosmic Crisp.
Pink Pearl Apple Waffles
This fall I was able to get my hands on a lot of Pink Pearl apples. I love this apple for it’s beautiful interior that makes them great for using in cooking and baking. I made some waffles featuring Pink Pearl apples that came out so good.
Speaking of waffles, I wanted to share that my family started a waffle blog called Waffled Together that you should check out. My oldest daughter is creating the graphic for the site. She is super talented.
Finding Green Dragon Apples for my Daughter
It always give me great joy to find my kid’s favorite fruits and see them get excited about it. My 2nd oldest daughter loves Green Dragon apples and this year she was able to get a bunch of them as they were grown nearby from where we were in Oregon.
This apple has a green skin with a very sweet flavor. It’s been eaten as fresh off the tree as you can as it will eventually get too soft.
Apple Picking Near Mt. Hood
Can’t have a year where I don’t get to go and pick my own apples. This year we got to travel up to the beautiful Mt. Hood area and pick our own apples at both Kiyokawa Family Orchards and Mt. View Orchards. We picked some apples like Swiss Gourmet as well as picking up a bunch of different already picked apples to try out or taste again. I didn’t get to get a large variety of apples last year in Utah, so it was exciting to again have access to a vast selection of varieties.
