How to Pick Envy Apples
In this newsletter, I talk about Envy apples and consistency (or lack there of) in the apples we buy at the store.
Do you ever buy Envy Apples?
Like I did with Cosmic Crisp apples earlier (you can read about that here) I decided to buy two Envy apples, one darker, one lighter and sample them side by side to see which one was better.
In this case, I found that the darker colored apple had a softer texture than the lighter colored one. Flavor wasn’t all that different.
Now I need to try these a few more times, but I think what it shows is that every apple is different. What is true for one apple, isn’t necessarily true for another.
We live in a fast food culture. We expect that hamburger to taste the same no matter what location of what fast food restaurant we are eating in. But that isn’t true with fruit. There is going to be inconsistency.
Besides the color differences, I have no idea which apple was sitting out at the grocery store longer at room temperature. Maybe the darker one was out on display for a week and just kept getting passed up.
When I decide what apples to buy, I choose the ones that I have had the most success with in terms of flavor and texture. I have had a few great Envy apples, but a lot of them I have had, the flavor was forgettable. I find that same thing to be true with Jazz apples. Even the Wild Twist apples I am loving right now I get some out of the same bag that are just ok, but most of them I love.
Leave a comment if you have had an Envy, Jazz, or Wild Twist apple recently and share what you thought.
I have been stocked up on apples pretty good lately. I did buy some more Cosmic Crisp for 99 cents a pound at Winco Foods in Utah a week ago. They were on the large size. I am still looking to see if I can find any EverCrisp apples out here. So far I have only seen them in the eastern and midwest part of the country.
