How to Pick Cosmic Crisp Apples

In this newsletter, I talk about how to pick the best Cosmic Crisp apples at the grocery store and find out what grocery store guides I have added.

Sometimes the exact same apple variety can look a little different. Look at these Cosmic Crisp apples.

You can see both of them have the little white spots that the apple is known for, but the one on the right is a lot darker in color than the one on the left.

Does it even matter?

I had been thinking that when I got ones that were darker, the flavor seems to be better. I wanted to test that theory. So I purposely picked the lightest one I could find at the store as well as the darkest one.

I did a side by side taste test along with my two oldest daughters. All 3 of us agreed that the apple on the right had the best flavor and tasted the sweetest. That’s the darker one.

Now I don’t want to say this is 100% sure, every time, but it’s a pattern I have noticed. And I don’t want to say this is true with all apples, let’s only apply this to Cosmic Crisp.

Red Delicious apples were originally a lighter color and then they bred them to be darker and darker and now everyone hates them. With that variety, the darker skin brings a more bitter flavor with it. But with Cosmic Crisp I didn’t think that.

My advice for the best, most flavorful Cosmic Crisp is to look for:

• Apples that are darker in color

• Smaller sized apples
