I think new crop, local Golden Delicious apples are wonderful at this time of year: sweet and mellow, crisp, but also tender. But an older Golden Delicious that’s been in storage for a while is another story. They get very soft, and if you’ll forgive the adjective, flabby. Not appealing at all!
I do appreciate your shining a light on this old-fashioned, maybe un-hip apple!
Yes I completely agree with you. If you want to go to an apple orchard and pick your own Golden Delicious, it's a great idea. They are great right off the tree. I feel the same with Gala apples as well, great off the tree, but they lose their flavor in storage.
For sure! Just because we didn't like an apple at the grocery store doesn't mean we aren't going to like it at all. Apples are all about timing. Sometimes you can get an apple to early. I had a freshly picked Pink Lady before and it was way too tart for me to just eat!

I agree about just-picked Galas!
And also, often, McIntosh. They can be so wonderful right off the tree!
