Did You Know There are Different Gala Strains?
In this newsletter, I am talking about the different strains of Gala apples that are out there and why you will probably never know which one you got in the grocery store.
We all know there are thousands of different apple varieties around the world. But did you know there are many different strains of the same apple? These strains aren’t different enough to be considered a new variety. Today, we are going to talk about the Gala apple.
I have heard of some of these strains and I did some research to find out some other names. Here is the list I came up with:
Wildfire
Annaglo
Galaxy
Gale
Regala
Tenroy
Mondial Gala
Royal Gala
Buckeye
Royal Gala is the only name that I have ever seen listed anywhere, so unless you are at an apple orchard you aren’t likely to see a strain name listed.
The differences that will matter most to the everyday person is the color and how early the apples are ready. Wildfire Gala ripen about 15 days early, so that allows the orchard to get Gala apples on the market earlier. I was reading about a couple apple orchards in Washington were harvesting these varieties in the last week or so. Be on the lookout for new crop Gala apples in stores soon. In my opinion Gala are best when they are as fresh as possible. Immediately off the tree is the best of course!
