Private Selection Apples
Sharing about the types of apples that I have been seeing under Kroger's Private Selection brand.
I just wanted to pop in today and share an observation I have made recently. If you have a Kroger owned store in your area (Kroger, Smith’s, Ralphs. Fred Meyer, Harris Teeter, Fry’s, etc.) you might find when you are shopping for apples in the produce department, they have some of the new varieties now under their Private Selection brand. Products with that get that label are suppose to be their premium items. The Private Selection ice cream is better than the Kroger brand ice cream (and more expensive!)
Sugar Bee was the newest one that I found under the Private Selection label. There was a lot of them when they had them on sale recently. Wild Twist is another example I have been seeing for the past couple years.
I also noticed Cosmic Crisp apples in bags, but these were just under the Kroger packaging not the Private Selection.
I wanted to bring this up to ask my audience a couple questions. First, I want to know if you have a Kroger owned store in your area.
Next, I’m curious—how familiar are you with any apple producers? When you see packaging or PLU stickers on apples, do you recognize the company that grew or shipped them?
I’ve been thinking about how private labels might actually reduce consumer familiarity with who’s behind the apples we eat. But then again—was there much familiarity to begin with?
If you can name any apple producer, hit the comment button and let me know. I pay attention to this kind of thing because it’s part of my job, but I’m really interested in how much others are noticing too.
