100 Apples! ππ
Learn about the last bunch of apples varieties I picked up to get me to 100 apple varieties eaten this season.
Mission accomplished!
If you have been following along you know that I have been trying to hit 100 apple varieties eaten this season to see if I could reach that number. Sure enough this weekend, I went and picked up the last 6 varieties I need to reach the 100 mark. There are still many varieties at the grocery store I could get to go past that number.
I love the way that I got to finish this challenge. I visited the Home Orchard Education Center, which according to them is βa community based educational non-profit centered around an established fruit-focused community orchard, located in Oregon Cityβ.
Their harvest has been completed for the season, but there were some apples of theirs that I had not had. I came in during their open public hours this past Saturday. I had been there previously this season and said I need just 6 more apple varieties to complete my challenge. We went through the apples varieties left to see if I could find just 6 ones I had not had this season. And we were successful!!! Much rejoicing took place!!!!
Here are the 6 that wrapped up my challenge:
Granny Goldsmith
Arkansas Black
Lady
I had not heard of the Goldsmith before. It is as you might guess it to be a cross between a Granny Smith and a Golden Delicious. I didnβt have high expectations for it as I was told being a late ripening apple and having a lot of rain lately that the apple was more watery tasting and bland. I had to try it for myself and it met my very low expectations. We will leave it at that!
For me the best of the group was a Goldrush. It is one of my favorite late season apple varieties that has tart-sweet flavor and stays crisp for a while. I bought a huge box of them when I was in Utah.
Thanks so much for everyoneβs support for this challenge. I will be sharing what I like from it in the coming weeks, so watch for that.
